Rafah Crossing Delay Halts Evacuation of Gaza Patients
Spokesman Raed Al-Nems told a news agency that the World Health Organization notified them of the cancellation but did not give any explanation for the decision.
Al-Nems explained that Red Crescent crews were completely ready to move patients from Al-Amal Hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis, yet the abrupt withdrawal of coordination at the final moment stopped the mission from proceeding.
He added that the society is now waiting for coordination to restart, hoping the third group of patients and wounded individuals can be transferred on Thursday, especially in light of the severe humanitarian and medical conditions confronting patients inside the Gaza Strip.
Official figures in Gaza suggest that approximately 22,000 injured and ill people are seeking to leave the Strip for medical care abroad, as Gaza’s health system has collapsed due to Israel’s genocidal war.
Israel partially reopened the Palestinian side of the Rafah crossing on Monday under highly restrictive measures, after occupying it since May 2024.
Egyptian and Israeli media report that about 50 Palestinians are supposed to cross daily into Gaza and a similar number into Egypt, including patients and their escorts, but this arrangement has yet to be implemented.
